Our joint program offers a unique, hands-on opportunity to learn about coral restoration and contribute to the preservation of our precious marine ecosystems. YOU can visit and help to clean the coral trees to help restore our beautiful reefs in the Florida Keys!

Program Highlights:

  • Morning Session:

    • Dive into the fascinating world of coral restoration with an educational session at the Coral Restoration Foundation in Key Largo.

    • Learn about Acropora palmata (elkhorn coral) and Acropora cervicornis (staghorn coral), as well as Orbicella spp. (boulder corals) and their nursery techniques.

    • Understand the importance of coral reefs and the role they play in the marine environment.

  • Afternoon Dive:

    • Embark on a boat trip to the coral nursery.

    • Participate in the hands-on activity of cleaning coral trees, ensuring these vital structures are free from harmful algae, fire worms and other threats.

    • Witness firsthand the incredible work being done to restore coral reefs.

Coral Restoration in the Florida Keys:

Mission: Iconic Reefs: One of the most ambitious restoration projects is Mission: Iconic Reefs, a NOAA-led effort aiming to restore seven iconic reef sites in the Florida Keys. This project involves large-scale outplanting of corals, including boulder corals (Orbicella spp.), to rebuild reef structures and enhance biodiversity. By participating in our program, you will directly contribute to these critical restoration efforts.
